Does Pristiq cause fatigue? (+3 findings)

In this article, we are going to discuss whether or not Pristiq causes fatigue, research findings on the link between Pristiq and fatigue, factors that may contribute to Pristiq-induced fatigue, what you should do if Pristiq causes persistent fatigue, and tips for managing fatigue while taking Pristiq.

Does Pristiq cause fatigue?

Yes, Pristiq can cause fatigue in certain individuals. Fatigue or tiredness is one of the possible side effects of Pristiq. (1)

Pristiq is the brand name of the antidepressant medication desvenlafaxine which belongs to the class of drugs known as SNRIs (Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors).

Pristiq functions by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are involved in regulating your mood, memory, energy, and sleep.

Elevated levels of serotonin and norepinephrine can lead to changes in the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, resulting in fatigue or drowsiness. However, Pristiq-induced fatigue or tiredness usually fades away as the body adjusts to the medication. (2)

What does research suggest?

Research on Pristiq causing fatigue is scarce. However, a study was carried out to assess the impact of 50 and 100 mg of desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) on lassitude and energy levels in individuals diagnosed with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder).

Nine MDD patients were enrolled in the trial and were treated with desvenlafaxine at daily doses ranging from 50 to 100 mg.

The study results showed that desvenlafaxine at doses of 50 and 100 mg per day considerably reduced symptoms of lassitude and improved energy levels. (3)

What factors may contribute to Pristiq-induced fatigue?

There are several factors that may contribute to Pristiq-induced fatigue such as: (4), (5)

Age: The elderly population is more prone to experience fatigue and tiredness while taking Pristiq. There is a natural loss of muscle mass and strength with age, making it harder to engage in physical activities, which can lead to fatigue.

Concurrent medications: Certain medications such as antihistamines, sedatives or sleeping pills, opioids, and anxiety medications can cause fatigue as a side effect, which can be exacerbated by Pristiq.

Underlying medical conditions: Certain medical conditions such as CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease), adrenal insufficiency, diabetes, and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) can induce fatigue while taking Pristiq.

Lifestyle factors: Physical inactivity, alcohol, lack of sleep, and poor nutrition may contribute to Pristiq-induced fatigue. These factors can reduce energy levels, disrupt sleep, and deplete your body of essential nutrients.

Stress: Overstressing can induce fatigue while taking Pristiq. Chronic stress can lead to burnout, which can cause feelings of exhaustion and irritability.

Medication dose: High doses of Pristiq may induce fatigue. High doses can increase the serotonin and norepinephrine levels which can disrupt the sleep-wake cycle and result in increased fatigue.

What should you do if Pristiq causes persistent fatigue?

If Pristiq causes persistent fatigue, consult your healthcare provider about reducing your medication dose. Your healthcare provider might gradually reduce your Pristiq dose over a period of weeks or months.

According to your condition, your healthcare provider might reduce your dose by 10-20% per week. You should take the reduced dose for at least one week before reducing the dose again.

If Prozac causes persistent fatigue despite reducing your dose. Your healthcare provider might switch you to an alternative with fewer adverse effects.

What are Pristiq alternatives if it causes persistent fatigue?

There are certain antidepressant alternatives that can cause less fatigue than Pristiq such as:

  • Levomilnacipran: It is an SNRI (Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors) antidepressant that may cause less fatigue symptoms as compared to Pristiq. (6)
  • Mirtazapine: It is an atypical antidepressant sold under the brand name Remeron. Mirtazapine can cause fewer fatigue symptoms than Pristiq. (7)
  • Bupropion: It is an atypical antidepressant that is marketed under the brand name Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin can increase your energy and reduce fatigue symptoms. (8)

Tips for managing fatigue while using Pristiq

There are several tips for managing fatigue while using Pristiq such as: (9)

Exercise: Regular exercise increases the release of endorphins, which are hormones that can improve your mood and energy levels. It also increases your blood circulation, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to your cells making you more energetic.

Hydration: It is important to stay hydrated as dehydration can contribute to fatigue. Drink plenty of water throughout your day to reduce fatigue while taking Pristiq.

Additionally, dehydration can cause your muscles to become fatigued more quickly, making you feel weaker and less able to perform physical activities.

Nutritious diet: Eating a healthy nutritious diet that contains vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can help boost energy levels and reduce fatigue. Conversely, a diet rich in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can cause your blood sugar levels to increase, which can lead to fatigue.

Get enough sleep: Sleeping for 7-8 hours per night is an important tip to combat fatigue. Lack of sleep can impact your cognitive abilities, making it harder to concentrate and focus, which can lead to feelings of fatigue and exhaustion.

Steer clear of alcohol and caffeine: Both can exacerbate fatigue symptoms. Alcohol can interfere with sleep cycles, making you feel fatigued and drowsy the following day. Caffeine can increase agitation and fatigue, making it harder to relax.

Reduce stress: Overstressing can exacerbate fatigue while taking Pristiq. Stress can cause your body to release the hormone cortisol, which can interfere with sleep and cause you to feel exhausted and fatigued.

Based on my knowledge and research, Pristiq can cause fatigue as a side effect of its use in some individuals. However, this side effect usually fades away as your body adjusts to the medication.

If you experience persistent fatigue while taking Pristiq, consult your healthcare provider about reducing your dose or switching to an alternative with fewer adverse effects.
