Does Plaquenil cause hair loss?

Does Plaquenil cause hair loss?

Plaquenil may cause hair loss as a side effect. It is not considered that common, but a lot of people have reported hair thinning and hair loss on this medication.

The exact mechanism through which Plaquenil damages your hair growth is not fully known, but it seems to affect some people more than others. Most experts believe that the way your body reacts to the medication and your overall genetic composition plays a huge role.

If you’re losing hair on Plaquenil, inform your healthcare provider right away. Just make sure you don’t stop your treatment halfway.

Is hair loss on Plaquenil reversible?

Hair loss on Plaquenil is temporary and it can be reversed once the culprit medication is discontinued. However, it could take months to recover from severe hair loss and you may not be satisfied with the quality of your regrown hair.

People have reported their hair being brittle and dry at first, but it eventually goes back to normal after some time.

What to do if Plaquenil causes hair loss?

If Plaquenil makes you lose hair, the first thing to do is to talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor may try reducing your dose a bit and this technique does work in a lot of cases.

However, if dose reduction is not possible in your case, your doctor may put you on another medication to support your hair growth. The most common approach is a topical Minoxidil solution.

It is a vasodilator which enhances the flow of blood towards your scalp. This promotes hair growth. However, it is quite expensive and not everyone can afford it.
