Does Phentermine expire?

Does Phentermine expire?

Yes, Phentermine does expire. The formulation has a lot of excipients, other than the active chemical moiety. Even if the active ingredient doesn’t go bad, the formulation can become unstable as the preservatives and stabilising agents may stop functioning.

Generally, the drug has an expiry date of 2 to 3 years after its manufacturing date. However, the stability of the drug also depends on how well you have stored them.

What are the dangers associated with taking expired Phentermine?

There are some possible dangers associated with taking expired Phentermine. These include:

  • Therapeutic failure
  • Toxicity
  • Kidney and liver damage

Therapeutic failure

The first concern when it comes to the use of expired Phentermine is a therapeutic failure. This is because the drug usually starts to lose its efficacy after the expiration date has passed.

This means that you will not be able to achieve the therapeutic response you are looking for as the drug will not have its full potency. This could lead to a lot of complications if you’re taking Phentermine for clinical obesity.

Make sure you steer clear of expired formulations to ensure 100% potency of Phentermine.

Toxicity

Although there is no data available to support this claim, it doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Some experts believe that Phentermine may begin to change chemically after the drug has expired. The chemical change can lead to toxicity if consumed repeatedly.

This is why you should stay away from expired Phentermine as there is no physical sign of chemical change and you can never know when you’re ingesting toxins in the name of Phentermine, once the drug has expired.

Kidney and liver damage

Studies have indicated that expired Phentermine or any other medication can affect your liver and kidneys, as these organs are primarily involved once the med is inside your body. The expired formulation not only has an expired active ingredient but preservatives as well.

These preservatives protect the med from physical and chemical degradation and also from microbial attacks. The preservatives eventually start to lose their efficacy and may attack your kidneys or liver instead.

So, always opt for unexpired medications, as expired ones may not work the way you want them to or may cause unwanted harmful effects – which is not worth the risk (1).

What to do if you have taken an expired Phentermine?

If you have accidentally taken a single standard dose of expired Phentermine, you shouldn’t worry, especially if the drug has recently expired.

However, it’s best to check if your drug is still in effect before you start taking it. If you have unknowingly or knowingly taken expired Phentermine for a while now and feel weird, talk to your healthcare provider.
