Does Nexplanon cause hair loss?

Does Nexplanon cause hair loss?

Yes, Nexplanon does cause hair loss, but in very few women. This birth control implant is not commonly associated with thinning your hair and making them fall off, but studies show that women may be more susceptible to this effect as compared to others.

The exact reason why some women experience hair loss on Nexplanon is not fully known, but experts believe that the way your body reacts to the medication and your genetic composition can make a huge difference (1).

Is Nexplanon-induced hair loss reversible?

Yes, Nexplanon-induced hair loss is reversible. It affects less than 10% of women using this medication and it usually goes away within a few months, or when your body adjusts to the medication.

You may also start to notice your hair growth coming back to normal while taking a break from Nexplanon. Some women may take a longer period of time to have their normal hair growth back as every human body recovers at a different rate.

However, if it has been quite a while and your hair loss continues to affect you, it’s best to talk to your doctor about this.

Is there any way to recover from Nexplanon-induced hair loss faster?

There are some tips that could help you recover from Nexplanon-induced hair loss faster. These include:

Ask your healthcare provider if you qualify for Minoxidil

If your hair loss with Nexplanon is severe, you can ask your healthcare provider if it’s okay for you to take Minoxidil (2). This medication is a vasodilator which enhances the blood flow towards your hair follicles and reverses baldness or hair loss.

This medication is effectively used for this purpose, but it can significantly lower your blood pressure as it dilates your blood vessels.

If your doctor thinks that you can take this medication safely and your hair loss does need medical attention now, Minoxidil would be a good medication to use. However, I would not recommend using any medication without your doctor’s approval.

Try multivitamins

Multivitamins can also help reverse hair loss, especially if you’re deficient. They promote the process of hair loss reversal and will provide your hair follicles with the necessary vitamins to start functioning normally again.

Vitamin-deficient people can be more susceptible to hair loss from medications and such supplements can significantly help you reverse them.

Make sure you’re eating healthy

Your diet is an extremely important factor that can affect literally every little thing in your body. A healthy diet can help you recover a lot faster. This is why it’s best to incorporate good fruits, veggies, and a lot of water into your daily routine.

Try castor and coconut oils

Castor oil and coconut oil are known for their hair-strengthening effects. You can try massaging them on your scalp half an hour before you wash your hair.

Massaging your scalp will also help increase the blood flow towards your hair follicles. It may not work rapidly and will most definitely take time, but you will eventually start to see results.
