Does Lithium cause hair loss?

Does Lithium cause hair loss?

Yes, Lithium can cause hair loss. In fact, this is considered one of the most commonly reported side effects in women taking this medication. The intensity of hair loss varies from person to person as it depends on the dosage and the frequency of drug administration.

According to the experts, your body’s response to Lithium is also a considerable factor as people react to medications differently. Age, genes, gender, duration of treatment, and the presence of any underlying disease can change the way your body responds to meds.

This is why it’s best not to compare your side effects and talk to your healthcare provider.

What do research studies suggest?

Lithium does not directly damage your hair growth, studies suggest. However, it can cause some other side effects that can cause hair loss. Lithium is known for causing Hypothyroidism (1).

It is a condition in which your thyroid gland does not function the way it should and fails to release thyroid hormones. This can lead to hair loss. Lithium can also increase your stress and anxiety levels which could affect not just your hair growth, but your overall health.

Is Lithium-induced hair loss reversible?

Hair loss on Lithium is reversible, fortunately! Those who experience this side effect begin to notice their hair regrowth once the medication is stopped.

However, it is not recommended to stop Lithium abruptly. Meds that can affect the chemistry of your brain are tapered off gradually if the treatment affects your health, and are never stopped suddenly. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to disturbing withdrawal symptoms.

What to do if Lithium causes hair loss?

If Lithium causes hair loss, talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor will most likely reduce your dose. He/she will also ask for thyroid screening to check the number of thyroid hormones.

If hypothyroidism is diagnosed, it could definitely be the reason why you might be losing hair. Your doctor will prescribe medications to manage your thyroid condition and you will be asked to control your stress levels.

This altogether will most likely stop hair loss. However, it might not go straight for some people. If your doctor thinks that the safe use of Lithium is not possible in your case, he/she will switch you to another medication.

For reversal of hair loss, your doctor may recommend using Minoxidil in the form of topical preparation. It is well-known for helping people with hair loss and facilitating hair regrowth (2).
