Does liquid Vitamin B12 expire?

Does liquid Vitamin B12 expire?

Yes, Liquid Vitamin B12 does come with an expiry date. This is because Vitamins begin to lose their potency with time. Another reason for not having a very long shelf-life is the nature of the formulation. Liquids are usually not considered stable as compared to solid dosage forms.

However, liquid Vitamin B12 absorbs at a much faster rate as compared to solid forms. If the formulation has recently expired, you can still take it. However, it is not recommended to take liquid Vitamin B12 that is more than 6 months past its expiration date.

What are the dangers associated with the use of expired Vitamin B12?

Expired Vitamin B12 does not possess any serious health risk. It just tends to lose its potency and it will not effectively make up for the Vitamin B12 deficiency in your body. This is why it is best to replace the bottle once it expires.

Expired meds have no guarantee regarding their safety and efficacy. Even if nothing harmful has been reported yet, it doesn’t mean it’s not possible. This is why it’s best to stay on the safe side and avoid expired medications, especially liquid preparations (1).

What to do if you have taken expired Vitamin B12?

If you have accidentally consumed expired Vitamin B12, don’t worry. The preparation will not cause you any harm. However, it will not benefit you either.

I would recommend you discard the expired formulation and get a new one. You can’t rely on an expired vitamin preparation to replenish your body’s Vitamin B12.
