Does Lexapro interact with phentermine? (5 interactions)

This article will explore the potential interaction between Lexapro and Phentermine.

Additionally, the article will explore the impact of Lexapro on the effectiveness of phentermine for weight loss and the potential interactions and side effects that may arise. Furthermore, it will provide tips on what to do if an interaction occurs and how to manage the situation effectively.

Does Lexapro interact with Phentermine?

Yes, Lexapro may interact with phentermine in some individuals. Lexapro (escitalopram) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), and it is primarily prescribed for treating depression and anxiety disorders [1].

On the other hand, phentermine is a stimulant that is used as an appetite suppressant to help people lose weight. Phentermine works by stimulating the release of norepinephrine in the brain, while Lexapro increases the availability of serotonin in the brain [2].

When taken together, they can interact and cause abnormal levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, potentially leading to serotonin syndrome. It is important to discuss with your doctor before taking these medications together.

What does research suggest?

There are no specific case studies discussing the specific interaction between Lexapro and phentermine. However, multiple studies have examined the interaction between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and sympathomimetics, such as phentermine.

In one case study, a patient who had been taking an SSRI and amphetamines experienced symptoms of amphetamine overdose after intentionally increasing his SSRI dose while adhering to his amphetamine treatment. However, he only took normal doses of amphetamines [3].

The study suggests that the administration of SSRI antidepressants potentiates the stimulating effects of sympathomimetics [3].

Another case report involved a patient who developed severe psychotic symptoms when combining amphetamines and an SSRI. He had been taking amphetamines for a long time and only experienced schizophrenic symptoms and hallucinations a few days after starting his SSRI antidepressant therapy [3].

Thus, it was concluded in this study that the combined administration of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (like Lexapro) and a sympathomimetic (like Phentermine) was responsible for these psychotic symptoms [3].

Similarly, a third study reported a patient who experienced an interaction between an SSRI (like Lexapro) and an appetite suppressant (like phentermine). He also experienced symptoms that indicate excessive stimulation of the central nervous system [4].

These studies indicate that combining SSRIs with sympathomimetics may lead to complications, such as overdose symptoms and severe psychotic episodes.

Can Lexapro impact the effectiveness of Phentermine?

Phentermine is commonly used for weight loss, and Lexapro has been associated with weight changes in some individuals. If Lexapro causes weight gain, it has the potential to counteract the weight loss effects of phentermine.

On the other hand, if Lexapro were to cause weight loss, it could potentially enhance the weight loss effects of phentermine even further. This could result in excessive weight loss and the risk of becoming underweight.

What are the possible interactions between Lexapro and Phentermine?

The interaction between Lexapro and phentermine may potentially increase the effects of each medication, leading to increased side effects such as insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, and racing thoughts [1,2].

Lexapro and Zoloft can interact in multiple other ways and cause various side effects and complications. Some of the possible interactions are written below:

Symptoms resembling amphetamine overdose

Combining Lexapro with normal doses of phentermine may result in symptoms resembling amphetamine overdose, as excessive stimulation of the nervous system can occur. This combination can even lead to psychotic symptoms and hallucinations in some patients [3].

Serotonin syndrome

There is an increased risk of serotonin syndrome when these drugs are combined. This can lead to hallucinations, seizures, abnormal blood pressure, tachycardia, tremors, elevated body temperature, increased sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serotonin syndrome can possibly lead to coma or death [5].

Heart problems

Both Lexapro and phentermine can cause heart problems. Lexapro can cause QT prolongation, a disturbance in heart rhythm, while phentermine is a sympathomimetic that increases heart rate. Both these medications can interact and further increase the risk of cardiovascular complications [1,2].

Weight loss

Combining Lexapro and Zoloft, both of which have the potential to cause weight loss individually, may lead to excessive weight loss and the risk of becoming underweight [1,2].

What to do if Lexapro and Phentermine interact?

If there is an interaction between Lexapro and Phentermine, it is important to take certain steps to manage and address the situation. Here are some tips:

  • Reach out to your doctor and inform them about the side effects you’re suffering from. They can recommend appropriate actions based on your specific situation.

  • Monitor for side effects and pay close attention to any new or worsening symptoms such as increased anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, or irregular heartbeats. If you experience any of these side effects, you must report them to your doctor as soon as possible.

  • Your doctor may consider adjusting the doses of one or both medications. They may reduce the dosage, suggest that you space their administration by taking them at separate times, or change the timing of administration. It may be better to take them in the morning to avoid insomnia.

  • Regular check-ups are necessary. It is advisable to regularly visit your doctor to monitor your condition, evaluate the effectiveness of the medications, and assess any potential side effects or interactions.

  • Inform your doctor about all the medications, supplements, or herbal remedies you are taking. This enables them to estimate your risk of experiencing side effects and interactions and make appropriate decisions regarding your treatment with Lexapro and phentermine.

  • Finally, it is crucial to adhere to the directions provided by your doctor regarding the dosages, schedules, and any precautions associated with the medications.

Based on my research, I found that Lexapro may interact with Phentermine in some individuals, potentially leading to serotonin syndrome, excessive weight loss, cardiovascular complications, psychotic symptoms, and symptoms resembling amphetamine overdose.

In addition, Lexapro may decrease phentermine’s efficacy in helping with weight loss. From my perspective, it is important to discuss with your doctor before taking these medications together and have them adjust your dosage or monitor you for any signs of complications.

I recommend being cautious and closely monitoring for side effects such as insomnia, nervousness, and racing thoughts. It is crucial to follow your doctor’s guidance regarding dosages, schedules, and precautions when taking both Lexapro and Phentermine.
