Does Indomethacin cause weight gain?

Does Indomethacin cause weight gain?

Indomethacin is not commonly associated with weight gain as a side effect and it wasn’t listed as a common side effect during clinical trials. However, the drug may rarely cause weight gain in some people. If you’re gaining weight on Indomethacin, talk to your healthcare provider.

The drug can make some people gain weight as an allergic response and such people should not continue taking this medication. However, some studies have shown that Indomethacin can enhance the activity of brown fat, the type of fat which is involved in energy production by burning off calories (1).

This can lower your blood glucose levels and help you lose some pounds. The side effects caused by Indomethacin depend on how your body responds to this medication.

We all have different physiological compositions and we all react differently when our bodies are exposed to medications. Just make sure you report your side effects to your doctor.

What side effects are common with Indomethacin?

Indomethacin may not cause weight gain, but it is associated with some other side effects. These include (2):

  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Rash
  • Fluid retention
  • Increased blood pressure

Serious side effects of indomethacin may include:

  • Stomach ulcers or bleeding
  • Kidney problems
  • Liver damage
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Blood disorders
  • Heart problems
  • Breathing difficulties

It is important to note that Indomethacin may not cause these side effects in every other individual and some people may experience side effects that are not mentioned in the above list. People are different and can respond differently to medications.

Patient-specific factors like age, weight, dosage strength, concomitant use of other medications, any underlying health conditions, and overall genetics can make a difference.

Indomethacin is generally well-tolerated but it might not be the best choice of medication for every other person. This is why it’s important to closely monitor your side effects and report them to your healthcare provider.
