Does Imuran make you gain weight?

Does Imuran make you gain weight?

Imuran (Azathioprine) does not make you gain weight itself. However, the drug may make it easier for you to eat and your body may start to absorb more nutrients from your gastrointestinal tract.

Irritable bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease can make food undesirable for you because of the digestive disturbances they cause. A person can lose a few pounds during an IBD flare-up.

When your body begins to respond to Imuran and your symptoms start to subside a little, you may find food desirable again and inflammation may increase the absorption of that food.

This can make you gain a few pounds back, but it is considered a good type of weight gain. Make sure you eat all the right foods and refrain from anything that may trigger an IBD flare.

What side effects are common with Imuran use?

Imuran may not cause weight gain but it is associated with side effects. These include (1):

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Rash

Imuran may also cause rare and serious side effects in some individuals, which should be immediately reported to the prescribing physician. These include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Increased risk of lymphoma and skin cancer
  • Bone marrow suppression
  • Increased risk of infections

It is important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects while taking Imuran and some people may report things that are not mentioned here. People are different and can respond differently to medications.

Patient-specific factors like age, weight, dosage strength, concomitant use of other medications, any underlying health conditions, and overall genetics can make a difference.

This is why it’s important to closely monitor your symptoms and report them to your doctor. It is also important to ensure the safe and effective use of medications and to take them exactly as directed by your doctor.
