Does Fioricet show up on a drug test?

Does Fioricet show up on a drug test?

Yes, Fioricet does show up on a drug test. Fioricet contains three active ingredients:

  • Butalbital
  • Acetaminophen
  • Caffeine

Butalbital is a Barbiturate, a class of medications that are included in the standard 12-panel drug test. Barbiturates are considered a drug of abuse and are characterized as a controlled substance (1).

This is exactly why most drug tests are focused on the entire class of Barbiturates. If you’re on prescription Fioricet and you’re taking standard therapeutic doses, it can show up on a drug test.

If your workplace is organizing the drug test, you can talk to them about your health condition and can submit your prescription as evidence that you’re taking the medication only for therapeutic purposes, and that too under your doctor’s supervision.

How long does Fioricet stay in your system?

As Fioricet has three active ingredients, each of these ingredients has its half-life and they all are eliminated from your body at different rates. If we specifically talk about Butalbital, it has the longest half-life among all of the ingredients, which is 35 hours (2).

This means that the initial peak concentration of Butalbital reduces to half after 35 hours. This process keeps on going until the drug is completely released  from your body (2).

How to avoid Fioricet showing up on a drug test?

There is no way to ‘avoid’ Fioricet showing up on a drug test, as the standard drug test does focus on the entire class of Barbiturates. However, you don’t need to worry about that.

Drug tests are used to detect persons who abuse  drugs. If you’re taking prescription Fioricet, you don’t need to worry about it. You can submit your prescription from the physician as evidence and Fioricet showing up on the test will not be a problem.
