Does Fenofibrate cause hair loss as a side effect?

Fenofibrate may or may not cause hair loss as a side effect. It is believed to be a possible side effect, but the incidence is rare. However, those who do experience hair loss have reported it to be one of the most devastating side effects.

The exact reason why it happens with Fenofibrate is not fully known. However, some experts believe that there could be other factors involved as well that make some people more sensitive to hair loss, as a lot of people have claimed to see no difference in their hair growth.

What does research suggest?

Research on the connection between Fenofibrate and hair loss is scarce and further research is required to demonstrate a clear relationship between Fenofibrate use and hair loss.

However, a research review discussed the rare side effects of Fenofibrate and alopecia was one of them (1). There are some rare case reports as well, in which hair loss was observed as a side effect of Fenofibrate.

However, there are a number of people who have never experienced hair loss or hair thinning while taking Fenofibrate. This indicates that hair loss could be a potential side effect of this medication, but its incidence is low.

Is Fenofibrate-induced hair loss reversible?

Fenofibrate-induced hair loss is considered reversible but only when you discontinue the medication. As I stated earlier, it is a rare side effect and not a lot of people have reported it so far.

However, it could take a severe turn and lead to bald patches on your head. This could be reversed after a few months of drug discontinuation.

What to do if Fenofibrate causes hair loss?

It’s best to talk to your healthcare provider if you’re experiencing hair loss on Fenofibrate.

If your side effect is severe and the continuation of Fenofibrate is toxic for your hair growth, your doctor will advise the next step based on your overall health, age, genes, dosage, and the severity of your condition. Don’t ever stop medications without your doctor’s approval.

As far as reversing your hair loss is concerned, your doctor may recommend using topical Minoxidil for promoting hair regrowth, once the medication is stopped (2). Just make sure you use it as directed by your doctor.
