Does Diltiazem cause hair loss as a side effect?

Does Diltiazem cause hair loss as a side effect?

Diltiazem may cause hair loss as a side effect, but the incidence is extremely rare. One survey revealed that Diltiazem may cause hair loss in less than 2% of the population taking this medication.

Those who do experience this side effect usually begin to notice hair thinning after 3 to 4 months of using this antihypertensive medication and not earlier than that.

Studies have also indicated that hair loss observed soon after taking Diltiazem could be a sign of an allergic reaction caused by the drug in some people and the problem goes away once the medication is stopped.

In general, side effects like hair loss, weight loss or gain, elevated cholesterol levels, etc are not common with Diltiazem.

What to do if Diltiazem is causing loss of hair?

If Diltiazem is causing loss of hair or you start to notice your hair declining, talk to your healthcare provider. Although it is highly unlikely for Diltiazem to cause this side effect, it should still be considered.

Every human body is different with different physiological makeups. There is no way to set a standard when it comes to side effects. Even the safest medication on this planet could cause toxicity in certain individuals.

This is why it’s best to closely monitor your symptoms and report them to your healthcare provider as soon as you can. There are some other antihypertensives that are not associated with hair loss and can replace Diltiazem if it affects your hair growth.
