Does Cymbalta cause dry throat? (5+ symptoms)

In this article, we will discuss whether Cymbalta causes dry throat or not. Furthermore, we’ll explore the connection between Cymbalta and dry throat, what research suggests on this, symptoms of dry throat and tips for preventing or relieving dry throat while taking Cymbalta.

Does Cymbalta cause dry throat?

Yes, Cymbalta may cause dry throat. However, dry throat is not listed as a common side effect of Cymbalta but it may be associated and followed by dry mouth caused by this medication. Individual’s responses to medications can vary and some people may experience side effects that are not commonly reported. (2)

Cymbalta (duloxetine) is classified as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It is widely prescribed for patients suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It may also be prescribed off-label for the treatment of fibromyalgia or chronic musculoskeletal pain. (2)

If you’re experiencing a dry throat while using Cymbalta, it’s advisable to inform your healthcare provider. They’ll help determine the underlying cause and adjust the treatment accordingly.

What’s the connection between Cymbalta and dry throat?

There is no direct relationship between Cymbalta and dry throat, however; it is believed that dry throat can be associated with the commonly reported side effect of Cymbalta and other antidepressants called dry mouth (xerostomia). (2,3)

The specific mechanism by which Cymbalta causes dry mouth which later may lead to dry throat is not clearly understood but it is thought to be related to the medication’s impact on the neurotransmitters of the brain. Cymbalta is an SNRI, it works by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly serotonin and norepinephrine. The fluctuations or alterations in these neurotransmitter levels may influence salivary gland functions. (2)

Saliva is considered to play a crucial role in maintaining moisture in the oral cavity and the throat. The reduction in saliva production due to altered chemical levels may result in dryness of the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat, leading to various sensations of dryness and discomfort. (3)

Other than this, individuals who experience dry mouth with Cymbalta or other antidepressants may also notice a scratchy feeling in their throat which can lead to difficulty swallowing, altered taste perception, changes in voice (hoarseness) and an increased risk of dental issues. (2)

What does research suggest?

According to a research study, scientists performed a randomized clinical trial on 605 patients to determine the severity of dry mouth caused by different classes of antidepressants. They compared 8 different classes of drugs including a placebo (fake pill). These studies were done 20-40 years ago and included drugs like tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) among others. (1)

They found out that TCAs made dry mouth worse and the symptoms were much lesser in SSRIs and SNRIs compared to others. Also, these studies were performed on healthy individuals and the risk of side effects could be enhanced in depressed patients, particularly when the dose is not well-adjusted or long-term use. (1)

What are the symptoms of dry throat?

Dry throat can manifest with various symptoms including: (3)

  • Persistent dry or scratchy sensation in the throat.
  • Soreness- the throat can become more sore or irritated, making it difficult to swallow.
  • Hoarseness- Dryness can lead to changes in the voice.
  • Coughing- persistent dry throat can trigger a cough as the body attempts to lubricate and soothe the irritated area.
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Itching
  • Redness or irritation
  • Voice fatigue

It’s important to keep in mind that these symptoms may not be necessarily a result of medication side effects but other factors may also contribute to triggering these effects which may include dehydration, certain environmental factors such as dry air, infections or allergies.
