Does Contrave make you sleepy?

Does Contrave make you sleepy?

Contrave (Naltrexone) may make you sleepy, tired, drowsy, or lightheaded. This medication can cause a number of different side effects in different individuals and it’s impossible to predict them before actually taking the medication.

Contrave is also associated with causing sleep disturbances and insomnia, and most doctors recommend not taking the medication before bedtime (1).

The reason why this medication causes different side effects is not fully known. However, our bodies also play an important role as every human being responds differently to medications.

Should you be concerned about Contrave-induced sleepiness?

You should not get concerned about sleepiness caused by Contrave, as the side effect is expected to go away as soon as your body adjusts to the medication.

However, excess sedation and impaired mental alertness could be a sign that Contrave is not the right choice of medication for you. If that’s the case and your energy levels are significantly affected, reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as you can.

What to do if Contrave causes sleepiness?

If Contrave causes sleepiness, talk to your doctor. However, if the sedation is not significant, you don’t need to make an early appointment with your doctor and the side effect will most likely go away.

However, as I just stated in the last section – too much sedation could be an alarming sign and you should consult your healthcare provider as soon as you can. Meanwhile, there are a few things that you can try to prevent the side effects. These are:

  • Try taking your medication at bedtime. If it helps you fall asleep and you observe little sedation when you wake up, this tip could help you with the side effect till it goes away.
  • If you do feel sleepy the following morning, go for a cup of coffee.
  • Do not engage in any activity that requires your full mental attention right after taking Contrave, like driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Do not take any other medication – that can put you to sleep – along with Contrave.
  • Do not drink alcohol while you’re being treated with Contrave.

These tips can help you with your side effects while you set an appointment with your doctor and be certain that the medication is safe for you to continue. It is also not recommended to stop taking the medication without your doctor’s approval.
