Does Concerta expire?

Does Concerta expire?

Yes, Concerta does expire. It usually has a shelf-life of 2-5 years. However, studies have suggested that Concerta can stay good long after the expiration date. The drug does not change its chemical. Properties and does not necessarily become toxic.

However, it can start to lose its potency over time. If your Concerta expired 6 months to a year ago, you can still take it. However, I would not recommend you to take Concerta which has expired longer than that.

This is because expired meds have no guarantee regarding their safety and efficacy. The FDA suggests discarding expired meds as no one knows the potential health risks that are associated with their use, especially medications like Concerta which are classified as controlled drugs. (1).

What are the dangers associated with the use of expired Concerta?

One of the biggest concerns with using expired Concerta is a therapeutic failure. Concerta is used to treat ADHD, a condition that requires 100% potent medications and their proper use.

Your Concerta should not stay long enough to expire as you should take your medication on time for the proper treatment and management of ADHD.

Taking expired medication will not benefit your condition and there is no way to tell how much potency has already been lost. This is why it’s best to discard the expired Concerta.

What to do if you have taken an expired Concerta?

If you have taken an expired Concerta, don’t worry much. The drug does not become toxic, it just loses its potency. A dose or two will not harm you in any way. However, they will not benefit you either. It’s best to talk to your healthcare provider and get a new prescription.

Concerta is a controlled substance and it should be taken properly. Do not cut or crush the tablets, or change your dose without consulting your doctor first.
