Does Bisoprolol cause hair loss?
Yes, Bisoprolol does cause hair loss. This side effect is not just confined to Bisoprolol. Every single one of beta-blockers is associated with this side effect. The exact cause is not fully known, but experts believe that Bisoprolol may restrict the flow of blood towards your scalp.
Blood is the primary transporter in your body that provides your cells with nutrients and oxygen, and removes carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products from the cells. When blood supply is restricted, your hair follicles receive a lesser amount of nutrients, which can affect the growth and overall quality of your hair.
Research studies on Bisoprolol and hair loss
There is limited research on Bisolprolol and hair loss. Beta-blockers in general are known for causing hair thinning and hair loss in healthy individuals. A 2019 study indicated that beta-blockers can cause or aggravate pre-existing alopecia (1).
A case report published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports in 2011 described a 75-year-old man who experienced hair loss after starting treatment with Bisoprolol for hypertension. The usage of Bisoprolol was deemed to be a potential cause, while alternative causes were not completely ruled out (2).
Even though hair loss is a rare side effect of Bisoprolol, it is important to let your doctor know about any odd symptoms or side effects. They can manage your symptoms and choose the best course of action for your particular case.
Is hair loss on Bisoprolol reversible?
Hair loss on Bisoprolol is reversible as the med does not affect your hair growth permanently. Most people start to notice their hair growing back within a few months after drug discontinuation.
However, some may also notice a positive change after dose reduction, but such cases are extremely rare as beta-blockers affect your hair as long as the treatment continues.
What to do if Bisoprolol causes hair loss?
If Bisoprolol causes hair loss, talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor will determine the best way to prevent your hair from getting further damaged. If dose reduction is an option for you, your doctor will opt for it.
If you continue to lose hair severely and uncontrollably, your doctor may switch you to another antihypertensive medication. However, make sure you don’t stop using Bisoprolol without your doctor’s approval.
