Does Benzonatate expire?

Does Benzonatate expire?

Yes, Benzonatate does expire and it is strongly not recommended to take this medication past its expiry date. The common recommendation is to take Benzonatate for a year after it’s dispensed and not any longer.

This is because the drug may change chemically or physically. The way it is stored also affects the shelf life of this medication. Make sure you avoid using the drug if it has been exposed to light for so long or if it has been left open for some time.

What are the dangers associated with consuming expired Benzonatate?

Expired Benzonatate may or may not affect your health. However, the desired therapeutic response will not be achieved when the drug has chemically expired.

Make sure you do not take this medication without the expiry date as no one can predict how your body will react if you take this medication past its expiry date. A few possibilities are:

  • Therapeutic failure
  • Bacterial infection
  • An allergic reaction
  • Abdominal pain

This is why the Food and Drug Administration has not recommended using expired medications (1). Such meds don’t have the manufacturer’s guarantee regarding their safety and efficacy.

What to do if you have accidentally taken expired Benzonatate?

If you have consumed expired Benzonatate and you start to feel any symptoms, reach out to the doctor as soon as you can. Although taking the standard dose of an expired medication might not do much harm, people can respond differently. It is best to avoid such a practice.
