Does Bactrim treat trichomoniasis?

Does Bactrim treat trichomoniasis?

No, Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim) does not treat Trichomoniasis. Bactrim is a strong antibiotic which is used for a lot of different bacterial infections, but it does not eradicate Trichomoniasis effectively.

If you think you have gotten trichomoniasis, reach out to your healthcare provider. Proper diagnosis and suitable prescription are essential to get rid of trichomoniasis properly.

What medications treat trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is treated by antibiotics, the most common one of which is Metronidazole (1). This is the drug of choice for Trichomoniasis and is quite effective in what it does.

Metronidazole should be taken for at least 5-7 days, once or twice each day. The exact dosage strength is determined by your healthcare provider and it may vary from person to person.

Another antibiotic, Tinidazole can also be used. Make sure you stick to your doctor’s choice of antibiotic and do not deviate from the recommended dose.

If you experience side effects on Metronidazole, report them to your healthcare provider. It is also important to make sure you don’t drink alcohol while you’re being treated with this medication because of potential health risks.

How to know you have Trichomoniasis?

It is best to talk to your doctor if you have the signs and symptoms associated with trichomoniasis. Your doctor will properly diagnose the condition and prescribe the best possible treatment regimen according to the details specific to you. The symptoms of trichomoniasis include:

  • Itching, burning, or soreness in the genital area
  • Abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis (may be thin, frothy, greenish-yellow, or grey)
  • Painful urination or sexual intercourse
  • Strong odour from the vagina or penis
  • Swelling or redness of the genitals (in females)

However, many people with trichomoniasis may not experience any symptoms at all. If left untreated, trichomoniasis can increase the risk of getting or spreading other sexually transmitted infections. This is why it’s important to consult your doctor.
