Does Allegra have Aspirin in it?

Does Allegra have Aspirin in it?

No, Allegra (Fexofenadine) does not have Aspirin in it. These two are different medications, are used for different therapeutic purposes, and have different side effects profiles.

Allegra is an over-the-counter antihistamine, whereas Aspirin is an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

About Allegra

Allegra (Fexofenadine) is used for the management and treatment of a number of allergy symptoms. It is a second-generation non-sedative antihistamine that you can take at any time of the day(1)

Allegra basically blocks Histamine-1 (H1) receptors and inhibits the actions of this chemical. Histamine is an allergy mediator and triggers the related symptoms. Allegra is generally a well-tolerated antihistamine, but it is associated with some side effects. These include:

  • Xerostomia or dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Tiredness
  • Headaches
  • Blisters in mouth
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pain in arms and legs
  • Pain in back
  • Painful menstruation
  • Coughing

Allegra may also cause some serious side effects in people who are allergic to this medication and may also trigger nosebleeds in some people. If you begin to feel unusual on this antihistamine, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.

Allegra may not suit everyone and there are plenty of other antihistamines you can replace it with.

About Aspirin

Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can be used for the management of pain, fever, and inflammation. Aspirin can also be used as a blood thinner in patients with coronary artery diseases or those who are at risk of cardiac problems(2)

Aspirin does so by inhibiting Prostaglandin synthesis, which is an important mediator of pain and inflammation. Like every other medication, Aspirin is also associated with some side effects. These include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Acid reflux
  • Flatulence

Some common and rare side effects of Aspirin include:

  • An allergic reaction or hypersensitivity
  • Arrhythmia or abnormal heartbeat
  • Irregular breathing
  • Tremors
  • Bloody vomiting
  • Loss of hearing
  • Black or tarry stools – indicating gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Ulceration

Make sure you use these medications properly and only as long as your condition demands. Although both Allegra and Aspirin are OTC medications, they can cause some serious complications if used excessively.

If you’re feeling unusual on any of these meds, reach out to your healthcare provider.
