Can you take Tylenol with DayQuil?

You shouldn’t take Tylenol and DayQuil together. Both of these meds contain Acetaminophen, which can be used to reduce pain and fever. Taking Tylenol with DayQuil means you’re taking way more Acetaminophen than you should at the same time.

However, you can take these two with a 4-6 hours gap in between. This way you won’t end up having a high amount of Acetaminophen in your blood at the same time and there won’t be an increased risk of side effects.

If you’re still confused, I can help you figure this out. Tylenol and DayQuil have the same amount of Acetaminophen, which would result in double dose administration if you take both of them together. Let’s break this down a little:

  • DayQuil consists of 325 mg of Acetaminophen. Other ingredients include 10 mg of Dextromethorphan and 5 mg of Phenylephrine in 15 ml liquid.
  • Tylenol usually contains 325 mg of Acetaminophen in its standard form.

The standard dose of DayQuil for an adult is two tablespoons, which makes 30 ml. That means you’ll be taking 650 mg of Acetaminophen.

If you take Tylenol at the same time, you will add 325 mg more to this and it will exceed the usual limit of Acetaminophen that should be in your body at one time.

What are the side effects associated with the concomitant use of Tylenol and DayQuil?

As I just stated, both Tylenol and DayQuil contain Acetaminophen. Now, Acetaminophen is considered safe mostly, but excess of this drug can damage your liver. This is because Acetaminophen is hepatotoxic in nature and it affects your liver if present in excess amounts (1).

You may not feel a thing if you have accidentally taken these two meds together, but long-term use can do a lot of damage. This could take a dangerous turn for people who suffer from hepatic insufficiency. This is why it’s best to have a 4-6 hour gap between these two.

If you need additional pain relief, you can take DayQuil with other OTC painkillers, like Ibuprofen. Since Ibuprofen is an NSAID and does not contain Acetaminophen, taking it along with DayQuil will not result in an increased concentration of Acetaminophen in your body.

Final words

To sum up, the concomitant use of Tylenol and DayQuil should be avoided especially by people who have an active liver disease or compromised hepatic functions. If one medication is not enough to help you with your symptoms, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.

Your healthcare professional will determine the best possible combination of medications to help you with your symptoms in a safe and effective manner.
