Can you take Robitussin DM and Sudafed together?

Yes, you can safely take Robitussin DM and Sudafed together. Robitussin DM contains the combination of Dextromethorphan and Guaifenesin – a cough suppressant and an expectorant respectively.

Sudafed, on the other hand, contains Pseudoephedrine which is a nasal decongestant. There is no known interaction between Dextromethorphan, Guaifenesin, and Pseudoephedrine, and they can be taken together safely for a variety of common cold & flu symptoms(1,2,3)

Pharmacist’s advice

All three of the active ingredients, since they are safe to use together, are also available in combined forms. The only common difference is the use of Phenylephrine as a nasal decongestant, instead of Pseudoephedrine. Some examples are:

Maximum Strength Sinus-Max® Pressure, Pain & Cough

Ingredients:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Guaifenesin
  • Phenylephrine
  • Dextromethorphan

The addition of Acetaminophen can help reduce your pain and fever, which are common symptoms of cold & flu.

TYLENOL® Cold + Flu Severe Medicine

Ingredients:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Dextromethorphan
  • Guaifenesin
  • Phenylephrine

These examples can give you the exact similar therapeutic benefit as the separate administration of Robitussin DM and Sudafed can.
