Can you take Mucinex Multi-Symptom with Ibuprofen?

Can you take Mucinex Multi-Symptom with Ibuprofen?

Yes, you can take Mucinex Multi-Symptom with Ibuprofen, as there are no known interactions between these two. Ibuprofen is a painkiller and anti-inflammatory agent which also helps to reduce fever. Mucinex Multi-Symptom contains three active ingredients:

  • Guaifenesin
  • Dextromethorphan
  • Phenylephrine

None of these ingredients reacts with Ibuprofen. However, some Mucinex Multi-Symptom like Mucinex Multi-Symptom cold nighttime formula and Mucinex Multi-Symptom cold & fever already contain Acetaminophen, which is also a painkiller and fever reducer (1,2).

If you’re using the one with Acetaminophen, you may not need to use Ibuprofen as Mucinex will most likely do the job on its own. The original Mucinex formulation is frequently paired with Acetaminophen (Tylenol), as it only contains Guaifenesin.

However, if you have severe pain or you’re taking them at different times, it is okay to use these formulations together. But again, mild body pain associated with cold and fever does not require two painkillers.

However, Ibuprofen is not only a painkiller, but it also reduces inflammation – which makes it more effective than Acetaminophen in some cases.
