Can you take Levothyroxine and Lexapro together?

It is not generally recommended to take Levothyroxine and Lexapro at the same time, but you can take them on the same day. Levothyroxine is generally recommended to take on an empty stomach because the drug absorbs more efficiently that way.

Taking Lexapro at the same time may affect your thyroid levels and Lexapro can cause gastrointestinal side effects in some people when taken on an empty stomach. So it’s best to not take these meds at the same time.

Potential side effects of taking Levothyroxine and Lexapro together

The combined use of Levothyroxine and Lexapro can increase the risk of the following side effects (1,2):

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Heart palpitations
  • Neurotransmitter imbalance

It is important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects. Some people may experience side effects that are not mentioned here. This is why it’s best to not take these two medications together. If you have to take both of them, talk to your doctor about how to space them out.

Important point – Take Levothyroxine the same way every day

It is crucial to take Levothyroxine at the same time and in the same way each day to maintain your thyroid levels. If you take it on an empty stomach one day and with food the next day, it may cause fluctuations in your thyroid levels.

It is generally recommended to take Levothyroxine in the morning, and nighttime is not considered suitable for taking the medication.

This is why it’s important that you take the medication in the exact same way every day and preferably at the same time to make the most of it and to manage your thyroid condition effectively.
