Can you take hydroxyzine with Zyrtec? (3+ interaction)

In this article, we will discuss if you can take hydroxyzine and Zyrtec together. We will also discuss the potential side effects associated with Zyrtec and hydroxyzine, along with some alternative drugs that can be used to treat allergic symptoms.

Can you take hydroxyzine with Zyrtec?

It is usually not recommended to take hydroxyzine with Zyrtec together or on the same day. Taking both drugs at the same time can increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, etc.

Hydroxyzine and Zyrtec both belong to the class of antihistamines and have the same mechanisms of action. In most of the cases, one antihistamine is sufficient to manage allergic reactions and symptoms. The use of two antihistamines should be considered only if your physician approves it for a particular medical reason. (1,2)

It is essential to follow the directions given by your physician to treat your condition more effectively. If you are experiencing any discomfort after taking the medication, consult your physician for a proper intervention.

What are the risks of taking Zyrtec and hydroxyzine together?

Taking Zyrtec and hydroxyzine simultaneously can pose some risks. Both of these medications are antihistamines, and when taken together, they may lead to additive side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness and dry mouth. (1,2)

While Zyrtec is considered a second-generation antihistamine and causes less sedation than first-generation antihistamines. However, the side effects of Zyrtec vary among individuals.

Hydroxyzine, on the other hand, is known for its sedative properties, which means it can cause significant drowsiness. Taking both medications at the same time can potentially result in excessive sedation, making it challenging to stay awake and alert during the day.

This sedation can affect your ability to drive, operate machinery, or engage in activities requiring mental alertness. Furthermore, combining these antihistamines may not necessarily provide additional relief from allergy symptoms.

Only one type of antihistamine is sufficient to manage the symptoms of allergies effectively. Using two different antihistamines at the same time can increase the risk of side effects without offering a significant increase in symptom relief.

What to do if you have accidentally taken Zyrtec and hydroxyzine?

If you have consumed Zyrtec and hydroxyzine accidentally, there is no need to worry; you may experience sedation, which will wear off after a few hours. Zyrtec and hydroxyzine belong to the same class of drugs called antihistamines. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is a highly selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist. Cetirizine inhibits H1 receptors, which are present in respiratory smooth muscle cells, vascular endothelial cells, immune cells and the GI tract. (1)

Zyrtec crosses the blood-brain barrier to a very small extent; hence, it induces minimal sedation. It also reduces the inflammation associated with allergic rhinitis. The elimination half-life of cetirizine is 8.3 hours and is excreted through the kidney. (1)

Hydroxyzine also acts by inhibiting the histamine H1 receptors. It also acts on the areas of the subcortical region in the brain, which explains the sedative effects of hydroxyzine. Hydroxyzine is rapidly absorbed from the GI tract, and its clinical effect is seen within 15 to 30 minutes after oral administration. (2)

Like all other drugs, hydroxyzine and Zyrtec are associated with side effects (1,2)

Zyrtec Hydroxyzine
  • Somnolence (dose related)
  • Fatigue
  • Pharyngitis
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Hypotension
  • Drug eruptions
  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Involuntary motor activity (tremor, convulsion)
  • Allergic reaction
  • Headache
  • Hallucination
  • Pruritus
  • Rash
  • Urticaria

Some of the side effects are rare. However, due to individual variability, you may or may not experience these side effects. If you notice any unwanted side effects after consuming either of the drugs, make sure you consult your physician for proper management.

What are the alternatives to taking Zyrtec and hydroxyzine?

There are alternative approaches to managing allergy symptoms besides taking Zyrtec and hydroxyzine at the same time. You can use nasal sprays containing corticosteroids such as Flonase or Nasacort, which can help reduce the inflammation and alleviate symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing and runny nose.

You can use loratadine, diphenhydramine, etc., if you have itchy skin. If the medication does not provide the desired relief, it is recommended that you seek the advice of a physician. Your physician will assess your condition and recommend the appropriate treatment to alleviate your symptoms.

In my experience

As per my knowledge, it is not recommended to take Zyretc with hydroxyzine together. Both belong to the same class of drugs and act in the same manner. If Zyrtec and hydroxyzine are taken together, they have a synergistic effect and can cause increased sedation. Even taking Zyrtec and hydroxyzine on the same day with time apart is not recommended, as it can cause daytime and nighttime sedation, which can interfere with your day-to-day activities.

If you are consuming both medications and experiencing increased sedation, I would suggest you take only one drug. If you are still experiencing any discomfort, make sure you consult your physician.
