Can you take expired Amoxicillin?

Can you take expired Amoxicillin?

It is not recommended to take expired Amoxicillin as there is no guarantee whether the drug is still effective against infections or not. Amoxicillin doesn’t really go bad or turn toxic once it’s past the expiration date printed by the manufacturers.

However, it can lose its potency. The thing with expired meds is that you can’t ever be sure how much potency of the drug has already been lost. If you have the original packaging, your Amoxicillin can stay good for 2-3 years (1).

When it is stored properly, it can easily outlive its expiration date, but taking the expired drug is still not recommended. If your pharmacist had dispensed the antibiotic in a prescription pill, it’s not recommended to use it past 1 year as storage conditions are not usually ideal and the drug may start to degrade earlier.

On the other hand, liquid Amoxicillin expires way earlier than solid Amoxicillin, as liquid formulations are not as stable as solid dosage forms are. So, make sure you check the expiry date on the label of Amoxicillin regardless of the dosage form you have at hand.

What are the side effects associated with the use of expired Amoxicillin?

Expired Amoxicillin may not become toxic once it expires, but the metabolites of expired antibiotics may cause certain types of allergies. Although there are not many such cases reported, it’s still considered a possibility.

The biggest consequence of using expired Amoxicillin is an untreated bacterial infection. If you’re using a med which has lost its potency, it will not actively attack the infectious growth of bacteria and your infection will continue to cause symptoms.

This therapeutic failure may lead to complications, especially if your infection spreads to your bloodstream. This is why it’s best to opt for an unexpired Amoxicillin if you have an active infection in your body (2).

What to do if you have taken expired Amoxicillin?

If you have accidentally taken a dose or two of expired Amoxicillin, you don’t have to worry about it. However, you shouldn’t keep doing that.

If you have an ongoing infection with new symptoms or symptoms you did not experience previously, it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider and get properly diagnosed.

Your condition may not need Amoxicillin and you may do well on another antibiotic. Even if Amoxicillin is the choice of antibiotic in your case, it’s not wise to use the expired one.
