Can you split or crush Viagra tablets?

Can you split or crush Viagra tablets?

Yes, you can split or crush Viagra tablets since they are immediate-release dosage forms and the entire active ingredient is released at the same time. However, you need to make sure you’re doing it the right way if you wish to secure the drug’s efficacy.

About splitting Viagra

Viagra tablets can be split in half, as I just told you. However, these tablets are film-coated. Splitting them in half will expose the drug contents to the environment, which may speed up the drug degradation process.

Make sure you keep the split tablet in a closed container, away from extreme temperatures and moisture, and use it as your next dose. Storing a split tablet for a long time is not recommended as it will most likely become unstable after some time (1).

Another important thing to mention here is the dose uniformity issue that could arise by splitting the tablet into two unequal halves. Viagra tablets are odd in shape and may be more difficult than other meds to cut in half.

You will have to use a sharp knife or a proper tablet cutter if you want to cut the tablet without accidentally crushing it. You should also make sure you’re cutting it in two equal halves to maintain uniform dose distribution.

About crushing Viagra

Viagra tablets can be crushed if you can’t swallow them. You can add it to semi-liquid foods like applesauce to make it easier to ingest and mask the bitter taste of the crushed tablet.

However, you should not save crushed tablets for later use. Crushing the tablet completely exposes it to the environment. Leaving the crushed contents open will most likely disturb the efficacy of the tablet.

So if you’re crushing it, take the dose right away and protect it from moisture and high temperature.
