Can you split Ambien?
Yes, you can split Ambien (Zolpidem). It is an immediate-release dosage form, like the majority of drugs, and can be split in half. However, you will have to make sure that you split the tablet into two equal halves since unequal halves will affect dose uniformity.
You may end up taking more or less than the actual dose and since Ambien is a sleeping pill, taking more than the prescribed dose can cause increased sedation. This is why it’s best to split the tablet equally using a sharp knife or a proper tablet cutter.
Do not split Zolpidem SR
Zolpidem is also available in a sustained-release dosage form, which should not be cut in half. Sustained-release meds release the active drug over an extended period of time and this helps reduce the frequency of dose administration.
Splitting such a formulation can affect the integrity of the tablet and the entire drug will be released at once. It is best to read the labels carefully before splitting the tablet to make sure you are splitting the right dosage form.
Final words
To sum up, you can split Ambien if you have immediate-release tablets. However, you still need to make sure you do it properly and not split the tablets into unequal halves. This can affect dose uniformity and you might end up taking more or less than the prescribed dose.
Make sure you don’t have the extended-release version of Zolpidem – the active ingredient present in Ambien. ER dosage forms should be swallowed whole. If you are concerned about something, seek professional help.
