Can you cut Tylenol PM in half?

Can you cut Tylenol PM in half?

Yes, you can cut Tylenol PM in half. It is a combination of Acetaminophen and Diphenhydramine, a painkiller and a sedative antihistamine respectively (1,2).

This medication is an immediate-release dosage form, which means the active ingredients are all released from the caplet at once. Such a dosage form can be cut in half.

However, since they are caplets, Tylenol PM has a capsule coating to make them easier for people to swallow (3). If you cut the tablet in half, it may become a little difficult for you to swallow.

It is generally considered best to swallow these tablets properly to make the most out of them. Tylenol PM should be taken properly and preferably at night, as it contains a sedative antihistamine.

Potential risks of cutting Tylenol PM in half

Cutting Tylenol PM in half may pose certain risks. Since, Tylenol PM is a combination of Acetaminophen and Diphenhydramine, cutting the tablet in half may not be evenly distributed, leading to unequal amounts of each active ingredient in each half. (3)

Uneven dosing can result in inadequate pain relief from Acetaminophen or insufficient sleep aid effect from Diphenhydramine (1,2). Moreover, altering the tablet’s structure may also change its release mechanism, potentially causing rapid or uneven release of the ingredients into your system.

Alternatives to cutting Tylenol PM in half

If cutting Tylenol PM in half is not an option, there are alternative formulations available that can provide the desired relief without the need for splitting the tablet. Instead of cutting the tablet, consider trying the liquid or chewable versions of Tylenol PM, if available.

These formulations offer a convenient way to take the medication without the need for swallowing a whole tablet. Additionally, you can discuss with your healthcare provider or pharmacist other suitable pain relievers or sleep aids that come in appropriate dosages for your needs.

Always follow the recommended dosing instructions and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or questions about using Tylenol PM or its alternatives.
