Can you cut Depakote in half?

Can you cut Depakote in half?

You can cut Depakote immediate-release tablets in half. This is a common practice among people who go from a higher to a lower dose, to save cost. However, Depakote is also available in other dosage forms which should never be crushed or cut in half.

Make sure you have Depakote immediate-release tablets before you cut them(1). If you’re not sure which type of Depakote tablets you have, reach out to your pharmacist.

Risks associated with cutting Depakote tablets

One of the biggest concerns with cutting Depakote tablets is content variation. If you’re cutting the tablets in half, you need to make sure that the two halves of the tablets are accurately equal.

This is because unequal halves contain different strengths of the active drug, and you may end up taking more or less than the prescribed dose.

Never cut Depakote delayed-release and extended-release tablets.

As I mentioned earlier, Depakote is also available in different dosage forms which should never be cut in half. If you’re taking Depakote delayed-release and extended-release tablets, you will have to swallow them whole(2)

This is because such tablets are based on modified release mechanisms and they release the active drug slowly over an extended period of time. The manufacturers achieve such an effect by coating the tablet with material that can support the delayed release of the active drug.

If you break these tablets in half, the controlled release mechanism will be ruined and the entire active drug will be released at once. This can result in an overdose and cause more prominent side effects.

This is why you should never cut extended-release dosage forms of any medication whatsoever. If you’re not sure which formulation you have, you can read the label as it’s clearly mentioned when the tablets are controlled and released. If you’re still confused, please reach out to your pharmacist.
