Can you crush Augmentin?

Can you crush Augmentin?

Yes, you can crush Augmentin tablets to make it easier for you to swallow them. Augmentin tablets, especially high-dose formulations, are large in size and swallowing them could be a problem for some people.

Such people can crush the tablets and add them to semi-liquid foods like applesauce and pudding (1). This will not only make it easier for you to swallow them but also mask the bitter taste of the medicine.

However, there are some precautions you need to keep in mind when crushing Augmentin tablets. These are:

  • Don’t save the crushed tablet for later use. Crushing the tablet can make it sensitive to the environment and can trigger drug degradation. You should take the crushed dose right away.
  • Make sure you take it all. Crushing the tablet can leave some of the powder behind. This can result in dose variation and you may end up taking less than the recommended dose.
  • Don’t add it to water. You might not be able to tolerate the bitter taste of the drug. It’s best to add it in something that can mask some of the taste.

Don’t crush Augmentin XR

Augmentin is also available as an extended-release dosage form called Augmentin XR. It is not recommended to crush Augmentin XR as crushing it would ruin the entire purpose of the tablets.

If your doctor has prescribed you Augmentin XR, swallow the tablets whole. If you find it difficult to do so, ask your doctor for an alternative.

Pharmacist’s advice

If you find it hard to swallow the tablets whole and crushing them is inconvenient, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist for an alternative. Augmentin is also available in a liquid dosage form.

However, the dose distribution in liquid formulations is different as compared to solid dosage forms and you need to ask your doctor about the exact quantity of Augmentin liquid that you should take to equal the prescribed dose.

Augmentin can be taken with or without food. You may also take it with milk, as dairy products do not typically affect its absorption. However, it is best to discuss it with your doctor.
