Can Viibryd be cut in half?

Can Viibryd be cut in half?

Yes, you can cut Viibryd in half if you find it difficult to swallow the entire tablet, but it’s best to ask your doctor before you do so. Most Viibryd tablets are scored to help you snap them into equal halves.

However, 40 mg Viibryd in particular is not scored and most people get concerned about breaking it in half. This is why you should talk to your doctor about splitting the tablet, especially if your prescribed dose is 20 mg(1)

Risks and consequences of cutting Viibryd in half

The biggest concern with cutting Viibryd tablets that are not scored is dose uniformity. If you divide the medication into two unequal halves, you will most likely end up taking more or less than the prescribed dose, which could be tricky.

Viibryd is an antidepressant which needs proper dose administration for maximum therapeutic benefits. If you keep taking a lower dose one day, and a higher dose another – this could cause variation in therapeutic response and the stay time of Viibryd in your system.

This is why you need to make sure that you either use a proper pill cutter or a very sharp knife to split the tablets in half while ensuring the equal sizes of the two halves.

Alternatives to cutting Viibryd

It’s best to talk to your doctor or pharmacist for alternatives to cutting Viibryd. If it is safe for you to do so, your doctor or pharmacist will guide you accordingly.

In case there are any available alternatives that you can switch to, your doctor will most likely recommend that. Make sure you don’t cut your tablet before consulting your doctor first.
