Can Trintellix be cut in half?

Can Trintellix be cut in half?

It is generally not recommended to cut or split Trintellix in half. This is because these meds are not usually scored and the manufacturer also recommends not doing so because of inadequate data regarding the stability of split Trintellix tablets(1)

This is why it’s best to reach out to your healthcare provider if you can’t swallow the tablets whole and ask for an alternative. You can cut the tablets if your doctor approves.

Risks and dangers associated with cutting Trintellix tablets in half

Trintellix (Vortioxetine) is an antidepressant and dose uniformity is essential with these meds or other meds that can affect your brain.

Since Trintellix tablets are scored, there is no guarantee that you’ll cut the tablets into two equal halves, which is necessary for proper dose administration.

Unequal tablet cutting may make you take more or less of your doctor’s prescribed dose, which can affect your therapeutic goals. The manufacturers also don’t guarantee uniform dose distribution if the tablets are cut in half.

Stability is also an issue and there are no research studies to discuss anything regarding that. So, it’s in your best interest to not split Trintellix tablets, at least not without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Alternatives to cutting Trintellix tablets

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for an alternative to cutting Trintellix tablets. Don’t try it on your own, as you may end up taking more or less than your prescribed dose.

So it’s best to discuss the options with your doctor, and if your healthcare professional approves of cutting Trintellix tablets, you can do so.
