Can Trazodone be taken for tooth pain?

Can Trazodone be taken for tooth pain?

No, you shouldn’t take Trazodone for tooth pain. Although Trazodone can help with chronic pain, it can not manage tooth pain effectively. There are plenty of other medications, even OTC painkillers, that can help you with your tooth pain more effectively than Trazodone.

You literally don’t have to take an antidepressant for tooth pain. It’s best to consult your dentist and get a proper diagnosis. You need to know the root cause of your tooth pain to address the problem more effectively.

What medications are used to manage tooth pain?

Common OTC painkillers like Ibuprofen and Naproxen can be used for the management of your tooth pain (1). These meds work quite well and provide pain relief within a few minutes.

There are also some other formulations available, like dental gels containing a local anaesthetic, which can help numb your affected tooth and provide immediate pain relief.

However, pain relief is just a symptomatic treatment and it won’t target the actual cause of your toothache. Some people may experience tooth pain because of a tooth infection, which does not go away without using an appropriate antibiotic.

This is why it’s best to consult your dentist and get a proper prescription to target the actual cause of your pain.

When is Trazodone the right choice of medication?

Trazodone is an antidepressant which can be used for the management and treatment of the following conditions (2):

  • Depression
  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder
  • Insomnia
  • Fibromyalgia or Chronic Pain
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Trazodone is a prescription medication for mental health symptoms. It can also be used for pain management – but chronic nerve pain and not a toothache. Trazodone should not be taken if not prescribed by the doctor and occasional administration of Trazodone won’t help with your symptoms.

This is why you need to take Trazodone in the best possible way if your doctor has prescribed it.
