Can Topamax® cause yeast infections?

Can Topamax® cause yeast infections?

Yes, Topamax® (Topiramate) can cause yeast infections in some individuals. This is a listed side effect and a number of women have reported getting a vaginal yeast infection after using Topamax® for a while.

It doesn’t happen right away and is not common in every case. Topamax is an anti-convulsant, which can somehow make your body susceptible to getting yeast infections (1). If you think you have a yeast infection, talk to your healthcare provider.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research available on the specific relationship between Topamax® (Topiramate) and yeast infections. However, some studies have shown that Topamax® can affect the immune system, which could potentially increase the risk of developing a yeast infection.

It is important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between Topamax® and yeast infections. If you are experiencing symptoms of a yeast infection while taking Topamax®, please talk to your healthcare provider.

How to treat a yeast infection caused by Topamax®?

Yeast infections can be treated by using antifungal medications. Both oral and topical dosage forms are prescribed, depending on the severity of your condition.

If your symptoms are mild, your doctor will prescribe an antifungal cream to apply to the inside of your vagina, which can clear up your infection within a few days. Make sure you apply the cream properly and wait a little if you need to pee after applying the antifungal cream

For more symptomatic yeast infections, you will have to take oral antifungal medications, like Fluconazole (2). Make sure you don’t take any medication without consulting your healthcare provider first.

How to prevent getting a yeast infection on Topamax®?

You can try to prevent getting an infection by taking really good care of your vaginal hygiene. You can also take Probiotics to promote your vaginal microflora.

This helps manage your vaginal pH and also keeps infections at bay. You can also try and ask your doctor if you can take a prophylactic antifungal medication from time to time.

However, this is more suitable for women who are at higher risk of getting a yeast infection. It is also recommended to avoid using hot baths or hot tubs.

Even if you do, make sure you change your wet underwear and don’t stay in it for too long. Moisture creates the most favorable environment for the yeast to grow.

You should work on making your immunity stronger by adopting a healthier lifestyle. In case you think you have an infection, reach out to your healthcare provider and don’t take any medication without your doctor’s approval.
