Can Simvastatin be crushed?

Can Simvastatin be crushed?

Yes, Simvastatin can be crushed and mixed with water or soft foods for ease of administration. It is a common practice among Simvastatin users, and normally other statins as well.

These meds are immediate-release tablets and can be safely crushed. It is still best to talk to your healthcare provider before you crush Simvastatin tablets.

Potential risks associated with crushing Simvastatin

Simvastatin tablets are film-coated, and completely ruined when you crush these tablets(1). The film coating around a tablet actually helps in a number of ways. In the case of Simvastatin, the coating enhances its stability and helps mask the unpleasant taste of the drug.

Crushing the tablets will cause the entire coating to get crushed and it won’t benefit the tablet anymore.

The right way to take the crushed tablets

Since crushed Simvastatin tablets are extremely unpleasant in taste, I don’t recommend adding them to water. This is because water won’t do anything to mask the bitter taste of the drug and some people may not be able to bear that taste.

For that very reason, I recommend adding the powder to soft foods like applesauce or pudding to help mask the taste of the drug and you can easily consume it. Make sure you take every last bit of that tablet and don’t leave anything behind.

Do not crush Simvastatin/Niacin Extended-release tablets

Simvastatin is also available in the combined form with Niacin, which should never be cut or crushed. This is because these are extended-release tablets, which are designed to release the drug slowly over an extended period of time(2)

Crushing them would ruin the controlled release mechanism and the entire drug will get released at once, which may result in an overdose.

This is why you should always check whether or not your tablets are extended-release. If they are, never cut or crush them. If you’re not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
