Can red yeast rice cause hair loss?

Can red yeast rice cause hair loss?

Red yeast rice is not commonly associated with hair loss as a side effect, but it can affect some people. Very few users have reported hair thinning if not hair loss.

However, some rare cases have reported extreme hair fall. According to experts, there are some factors that could make some people more sensitive to this kind of hair loss, like age, any underlying disease, or the amount of red yeast rice consumed.

Red yeast rice is a type of supplement that is made by fermenting rice with a specific type of yeast. It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine and is believed to have potential cholesterol-lowering effects (1,2,3).

If you’re losing a lot of hair on red yeast rice, I would recommend not using it any further. If you are concerned about your cholesterol levels, talk to your healthcare provider. You may be using another medication, like beta-blockers, that can potentially lead to hair loss.

What are the side effects associated with red yeast rice?

While it is generally considered safe, red yeast rice can have both common and rare side effects. It’s important to note that the quality and potency of red yeast rice supplements can vary, so it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.

Some of the common side effects may include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Heartburn
  • Gas or bloating
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle pain or tenderness

Rare or more serious side effects of red yeast rice can include:

  • Allergic reactions – rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
  • Liver damage –  jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, abdominal pain, and fatigue
  • Muscle problems – when taken with any medication that can cause muscle weakness, like Statins.

Final words

To sum up, red yeast rice is a supplement and it is not associated with hair loss commonly. If you are experiencing hair loss, there could be other factors contributing to it. Make sure you discuss this with your doctor to get to the root cause of your symptoms.
