Can Levaquin cause a yeast infection?

Can Levaquin cause a yeast infection?

Levaquin may or may not cause a yeast infection. Your chances of getting a yeast infection on this medication depend on how long you’ve been using it. Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is an antibiotic, which is typically used for 7-14 days.

It may not cause a yeast infection in healthy women within this time duration. However, longer use of Levaquin can damage your vaginal microflora, which in turn makes you susceptible to getting a yeast infection (1).

This is because the good bacteria in your vagina protect you from certain infections by preventing the growth of microbes. When these bacteria are attacked by the antibiotic, your natural defences go down and you get exposed to such infections.

Women who are at higher risk of getting infections generally – like those with weak immune systems – can get a yeast infection within just a week of using Levaquin. If you think you have one, reach out to your healthcare provider.

How to treat a yeast infection caused by Levaquin?

Yeast infections are treated by antifungal medications. Once your doctor has diagnosed the infection, you will have to take either a topical or oral antifungal medication.

It depends on the severity of your symptoms. If your yeast infection is mild, antifungal creams or ointments are considered enough to manage it.

However, oral medication is necessary in case of moderate to severe yeast infection. There are plenty of antifungal drugs, like Fluconazole, which are active against yeast infections (2). The infection goes away within a few days after proper care and treatment.

How to prevent getting a yeast infection while taking Levaquin?

You can prevent getting a yeast infection while taking Levaquin by taking Diflucan (Fluconazole) as a prophylactic antifungal medication. This way, the medication will inhibit the growth of yeast and will prevent a symptomatic yeast infection.

You can also try and take Probiotics while taking Levaquin. Probiotics can promote your vaginal microflora, which can work to keep fungal infections at bay.

It is also quite important to take good care of your vaginal hygiene and make sure you don’t use any irritants. If you think you have symptoms of a yeast infection, talk to your healthcare provider.
