Can I use expired Tramadol?

Can I use expired Tramadol?

It’s best not to take Tramadol once it’s past the expiration date. Tramadol can stay effective for much longer than the expiration date, but there’s no guarantee of safety. The expiration date basically tells you that the drug has 100% potency and it’s safe to use for a certain amount of time.

Once the drug is expired, it can stay effective for 15+ years, but there is no guarantee when it comes to its safety and how far the drug is with the deterioration process.

The drug can start to change physically and chemically, and there’s no way to tell when this will start to happen once Tramadol has expired. In general, Tramadol has a shelf-life of about 2-3 years.

This is why it’s best to not use Tramadol after this date. However, if the drug has expired for a small amount of time, like 2-3 months, you can take it.

What are the dangers associated with using expired Tramadol?

The dangers associated with using expired Tramadol depend on how long the drug has expired. If it has been quite a while, Tramadol may have lost its potency and it will not show any pain-relieving effect. In most cases, this is the only thing you struggle with.

However, if the drug changes chemically after its expiration date, it may convert into some other entity to which your body may not respond well. Tramadol is an opioid painkiller and its proper use is essential. The FDA has recommended against the use of expired medications, especially meds like Tramadol (1).

If you have taken a Tramadol and you do not see any difference in your pain, check if the drug is expired. Do not take another dose to achieve better results. If you feel unusual or any symptoms that you were not experiencing previously, reach out to the doctor and seek medical attention.

What to do if you have accidentally taken expired Tramadol?

If you have accidentally taken an expired Tramadol and you feel unwell, seek medical attention right away. Although a dose or two of expired Tramadol is not likely to harm you or cause any reaction, people are different and they respond differently to medications.

This is why it’s in your best interest to stick to unexpired medications, especially if you are taking meds that can affect your brain functions and your mood, such as Tramadol.
