Can I use expired Miralax?

Can I use expired Miralax?

No, you should not use expired Miralax. Not only will it be ineffective, but expired Miralax becomes susceptible to bacterial growth as there’s no further guarantee from the manufacturer that the preservatives used in the formulation will continue to work or not.

This is why it’s best to avoid using expired Miralax or any other liquid preparation.

What are the dangers associated with the use of expired Miralax?

Expired Miralax will not be able to give you your desired therapeutic outcome. This is because a lot of liquid preparations lose their potency once they are past the expiration date.

However, there is another risk associated with the use of expired Miralax. As it is a liquid preparation, it becomes extremely sensitive to microbial growth and contamination.

There could be two factors that lead to bacterial growth: liquid medium as preparation with more water content is favourable for bacterial growth, and expired preservatives. This is why it is best to check the expiry date before you consume Miralax.

What to do if you have accidentally taken expired Miralax?

If you have accidentally taken expired Miralax and you are feeling unusual, please reach out to your healthcare provider. Although it is highly unlikely to experience serious side effects after consuming the expired Miralax, people are different and can respond differently to meds.

This is why FDA recommends against the use of expired meds as you can’t tell how they will work or how your body will respond to them (1). It is a health risk that one shouldn’t take. Always rely on unexpired medication to help you with your symptoms.
