Can you take Zoloft in the morning and Trazodone at night?

Yes, you can take Zoloft (Sertraline) in the morning and Trazodone at night, if your healthcare provider has prescribed this combination. Zoloft and Trazodone are often prescribed together for a number of reasons.

They both are antidepressants and alter the chemical composition of your brain to help relieve the symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and several other mental health conditions.

However, they both are prescription medications and should not be used without consulting your doctor first.

What are the benefits of taking Zoloft in the morning and Trazodone at night?

Zoloft is an antidepressant well known for causing sleep disturbances, especially during the early course of the treatment (1). Trazodone, another antidepressant, is known for its sedating activity as it helps calm you down and prepares you to sleep (2).

When these two antidepressants are combined, you find it easier to fall asleep and the following morning fatigue doesn’t remain an issue. However, it’s best to adjust the dose of both of these antidepressants to minimise the risk and side effects.

Trazodone can be used for chronic pains, like fibromyalgia. However, Sertraline may not work well for this condition, and Trazodone is often paired with medications like Pregabalin for its management.

What are the side effects of taking Zoloft and Trazodone?

Zoloft and Trazodone don’t really cause additional side effects when you take these two at separate times – Zoloft in the morning and Trazodone at night.

However, the common side effects related to individual drugs remain the same and they slowly start to subside once your body adjusts to these meds.

Some of the common side effects of Zoloft may include nausea, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, insomnia, mood swings, nightmares, and dry mouth. More serious side effects may include serotonin syndrome, which can cause confusion, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and muscle stiffness.

Trazodone can also cause a range of side effects. Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, dry mouth, blurred vision, nightmares, and drowsiness. More serious side effects may include priapism (a painful erection that lasts for several hours), seizures, and serotonin syndrome.

However, the dosage strength of these two antidepressants that you’re taking can make a huge difference. When two antidepressants are combined, their doses are normally adjusted to minimise the side effects.

This dose adjustment is the key to the safe and effective use of Zoloft and Trazodone. Make sure you don’t take any more than your doctor’s prescribed dose.

Final words

For some people, combining Trazodone with Zoloft can be safe and helpful, but this should only be done with a doctor’s approval. To prevent any potential interactions or negative effects, it’s crucial to let your doctor know about all of your drugs, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements.

It’s also critical to carefully monitor your symptoms while taking these meds together. Get immediate medical attention if you have any unexpected symptoms, such as chest pain, breathing problems, or significant mood swings.
