Can you take Trazodone and ZzzQuil together?

Can you take Trazodone and ZzzQuil together?

No, you shouldn’t take Trazodone and ZzzQuil together. Although these two meds don’t chemically interfere with one another, they can cause one similar side effect which is the main reason why Trazodone and ZzzQuil are not used together.

Trazodone is an antidepressant, which can be used for insomnia because of its sedating properties. The drug blocks histamine in your brain which can induce sleep (1).

ZzzQuil, on the other hand, contains Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, which is also used for the management of insomnia because it causes sedation (2).

Potential risks associated with taking Trazodone and ZzzQuil together

There are several risks associated with taking Trazodone and ZzzQuil together, and these medications should only be taken together under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Some of the potential risks of taking Trazodone and ZzzQuil together may include:

Excessive sedation

Both Trazodone and ZzzQuil are sedative medications, and taking them together can increase the risk of excessive sedation. This can lead to dizziness, confusion, and impaired motor coordination, which can increase the risk of losing balance, falling down, or unconsciousness.

Increased risk of respiratory depression

Taking Trazodone and ZzzQuil together can also increase the risk of respiratory depression, which is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by slow, shallow breathing.

This is more likely to occur in individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and these patients can suffer from fatal consequences if this combination impairs their respiratory functions.

Impaired cognition

Trazodone and ZzzQuil can both cause cognitive impairment, including drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating when taken alone. Combining these medications can further increase the risk of impaired cognition, which can affect their daily life activities.

Increased risk of other side events

Combining medications increases the risk of side effects, including allergic reactions, gastrointestinal upset, and cardiac arrhythmias.

What to do if you’re struggling with insomnia and depression?

If you’re struggling with both insomnia and depression, and this is why you need to take both Trazodone and ZzzQuil – talk to your healthcare provider.

Trazodone is itself a sedating antidepressant and it can help manage both your depression and insomnia when taken at bedtime. If you’re using Trazodone for depression only and you don’t find it much sedating, you can take it in the morning and an appropriate sleep aid at night.

It’s always best to consult your doctor and discuss your symptoms and how to manage them properly. Just make sure you don’t pair any medication with Trazodone without consulting your doctor first.
