Can I take Fluconazole that expired 1 year ago?

Can you take Fluconazole which expired 1 year ago?

I would not recommend you to take Fluconazole which expired a year ago, especially for an active and symptomatic fungal infection. Expired medications have no guarantee regarding their safety and efficacy, which is what the Food and Drug Administration recommends against the use of expired medications.

If you think you have a fungal infection, consult your doctor and get a proper diagnosis. Microbial infections should not be left untreated. Expired medications become less potent with time and they may not be able to attack the infection with full force.

What are the dangers associated with the use of expired Fluconazole?

Expired Fluconazole may cause the following consequences:

  • Therapeutic insufficiency – As the drug is not fully potent, it will not deliver the desired therapeutic outcome. This can worsen the fungal infection.
  • Antifungal resistance – expired Fluconazole can create resistance in your body. This can make Fluconazole ineffective against infectious fungi.
  • Toxicity – expired Fluconazole can break down into harmful chemicals that can cause toxic reactions when ingested, leading to severe health problems.
  • Masking of infection – expired Fluconazole may mask the actual severity of the infection, which can lead to improper treatment of your infection.

What to do if you have accidentally taken expired Fluconazole?

If you have accidentally taken expired Fluconazole and you feel unusual, reach out to your healthcare provider. Although it is unlikely for a dose or two of expired Fluconazole to significantly damage your health, people are different and may react differently to medications.

It’s best to talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have a fungal infection and take fully potent medications to deal with your symptoms effectively.
