Can you take Benadryl and Tylenol PM together?

Can you take Benadryl and Tylenol PM together?

No, it is not recommended to take Benadryl and Tylenol PM together as both of these medications contain Diphenhydramine a sedative antihistamine.

Benadryl only contains Diphenhydramine, whereas Tylenol PM contains this antihistamine combined with Acetaminophen, one of the most commonly used painkillers. Taking the two together can significantly increase the drug concentration in your body.

This is why you should not take Benadryl and Tylenol PM together. You can either take Tylenol PM alone or take an original Tylenol which contains only Acetaminophen with Benadryl.

Potential side effects of taking Benadryl and Tylenol PM together

Taking Benadryl and Tylenol PM together can cause a high amount of Diphenhydramine in your system, which can give rise to a number of side effects. These include:

  • Nausea
  • Dry eyes
  • Xerostomia or dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Excessive drowsiness
  • Tiredness

Excessive drowsiness is the side effect of concern here since Diphenhydramine is highly sedative. It is, in fact, used for the management and treatment of insomnia. This is why taking Benadryl and Tylenol PM is not recommended.

Advice from your pharmacist

If you’re looking for a good night’s sleep along with some mild pain relief, Tylenol PM has got you covered. You don’t need an additional Diphenhydramine to help you sleep better as one med is enough.

However, I would still recommend using Benadryl occasionally for sleep aid. This is not a permanent solution and meds shouldn’t be used for the long term.

You can try other things to maintain your sleep hygiene, like avoiding cell phones and other electronic gadgets at bedtime. Changing your routine and overall lifestyle is far better than relying on medications.
