Can I split my Effexor XR capsules?

Can I split my Effexor XR capsules?

You can open your Effexor XR capsule and pour the contents on applesauce or pudding for ease of administration. Although capsules should be swallowed whole and they are generally easier to swallow as compared to tablets(1), some people may find it difficult to do so.

In such a case, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on food. However, don’t chew them.

Risks associated with opening Effexor XR capsules

Although opening Effexor XR capsules may not be an issue, chewing the capsule contents can affect how the med works.

Effexor XR is the extended-release dosage form that is designed in such a way that the active ingredient is released slowly from the granules, over an extended period of time.

This reduces the frequency of dose administration. If you chew the encapsulated granules, you’ll accidentally break them down and the entire drug will get released all at once.

This may result in an overdose as you’ll end up having a higher amount of Effexor concentration in your blood. This is why make sure you swallow the contents, even if you’re not swallowing the capsule whole.

Don’t split Venlafaxine XR tablets

Venlafaxine XR tablets should not be split in half and they should not be treated like capsules. This is because the active ingredient is uniformly divided throughout the tablet and the coated layers of these tablets control the release of the drug.

Splitting them in half can cause the entire drug to get released at once. Venlafaxine XR tablets should always be swallowed whole. If you can’t, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for an alternative dosage form.
