Can Hydrochlorothiazide cause hair loss?

Can Hydrochlorothiazide cause hair loss?

Hydrochlorothiazide may or may not cause hair loss as a side effect. This side effect is not considered a common one, but it can still affect some people.

However, people who do experience this side effect do not start to lose hair right away. It could take up to 3 to 4 months of continuous Hydrochlorothiazide use to weaken your hair enough that they begin to fall off.

Hydrochlorothiazide can also trigger hair loss when it is used in combination with other medications like Triamterene. This medication is also known for causing pain in hair follicles and headaches.

What does research indicate?

Research suggests that hair loss as a side effect of Hydrochlorothiazide, while not common, is possible. The exact incidence of this side effect is not well established, as it may vary among individuals.

Hair loss related to Hydrochlorothiazide is believed to be a result of a disruption in the normal hair growth cycle. This medication can affect the levels of certain hormones and nutrients in the body, which may influence hair follicle function (1).

Additionally, Hydrochlorothiazide can potentially lead to an increase in urination, which may cause the loss of essential minerals and vitamins necessary for healthy hair growth (2,3).

However, it is important to note that individual responses to medications can vary, and not everyone who takes Hydrochlorothiazide will experience hair loss. If you are concerned about this side effect, it is advisable to discuss it with your healthcare provider.

Is Hydrochlorothiazide-induced hair loss reversible?

Hair loss on Hydrochlorothiazide is reversible. Some people may begin to recover earlier once their bodies adjust to this medication. However, some people could take months to notice significant hair-loss reversal.

If it’s been quite a while and you’re still experiencing this side effect, talk to your healthcare provider.

What to do if you’re experiencing Hydrochlorothiazide-induced hair loss?

If you’re losing hair while being treated with Hydrochlorothiazide, talk to your healthcare provider about it. In most cases, Hydrochlorothiazide is paired with other medications to control blood pressure, which makes the hair loss on this medication more pronounced.

If that’s the case with you, your doctor will switch one or more of your antihypertensive medications. Just make sure you don’t switch or stop your medications on your own.

There are tips that can help reverse Hydrochlorothiazide-induced hair loss or can prevent it from getting worse. These include:

  • Consume a well-balanced diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins to support healthy hair growth. Include foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  • Minimise the use of heat styling tools or use them at the lowest temperature setting.
  • Gently massaging your scalp can help improve blood circulation and stimulate hair follicles.
  • Manage your stress levels, as it can worsen hair loss. Engage in stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or hobbies that you enjoy.
  • Consult with your healthcare provider about potential supplements that may support hair health, such as biotin, vitamin D, or omega-3 fatty acids.
