Can Gabapentin cause yeast infections?

Can Gabapentin cause yeast infections?

No, Gabapentin does not cause yeast infections. This side effect is not reported in any of the clinical trials or research studies. Gabapentin is associated with a lot of side effects and it does cause infections, but most of them are viral and bacterial in nature (1).

Yeast is a fungus and fungal infections are not common with Gabapentin. However, if you do think you have a yeast infection, it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider. It may not necessarily be a side effect of Gabapentin and some other factors may be responsible for your infection.

How to treat a yeast infection?

Yeast infections are treated by antifungal medications. For mild yeast infections, topical antifungals are considered enough to deal with the symptoms effectively. However, more serious yeast infections require oral medication for complete eradication.

A commonly prescribed antifungal medication is Fluconazole (Diflucan), which is quite active against a yeast infection. Make sure you reach out to your doctor if you think you have a yeast infection and don’t take any medication on your own.

How to know you have a yeast infection?

Yeast infections are commonly characterised by the following signs and symptoms (2):

  • Itching and burning in the affected area
  • Redness and swelling
  • Pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse or urination
  • Thick, white discharge that may have a cottage cheese-like consistency
  • Rash or blisters on the skin
  • Soreness or cracking at the corners of the mouth
  • Unusual odour, especially in cases of vaginal yeast infections.

Yeast infections can develop in the mouth, skin, genital region, bloodstream, and other areas of the body. Itching, burning, and thick, white discharge are classic symptoms of vaginal yeast infections in women.

Yeast infections in males can make their penis red and scratchy. A diaper rash with redness and scaling in the diaper area can develop in infants with yeast infections.

Systemic yeast infections, which can cause fever, chills, and other hazardous symptoms, can happen in severe cases. If any symptoms of a yeast infection are present, it is crucial to visit a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
