Can Carafate be crushed?

Can Carafate be crushed?

Yes, Carafate (Sucralfate) tablets can be crushed and mixed with water for ease of administration. A huge number of people take this medication in a slurry form, rather than consuming the entire tablet.

So, it’s absolutely okay to crush the tablets. However, make sure you take the entire tablet and do not leave any crushed powder behind.

Why is it actually better to take crushed Carafate tablets?

Crushing Carafate tablets is actually considered a better option, as compared to taking the tablet whole. This is because Carafate tablets are hard and they may take a long period of time to disintegrate in your stomach.

Carafate protects your stomach from damage caused by gastric acid by making a protective gel coating(1). The drug actually needs stomach acid to make this gel, and an intact tablet takes a lot of time to do so.

This is why it’s actually better to crush Carafate and add it to 15-30 ml of water to make a slurry. This slurry works faster than the intact tablet.

Alternatives to crushing Carafate

If crushing Carafate tablets every time before you take them is a hassle for you, you can ask your pharmacist for an alternative. Carafate is also available in an oral liquid dosage form.

However, your insurance may not cover the liquid form of the drug. In that case, crushing the tablets is actually a better option for you. Just make sure you don’t add the crushed tablet to anything that is not compatible with the drug, like alcoholic beverages
